Federal Work-Study Information for Faculty

Normally, the Federal Work-Study (FWS) Program will fund several graduate students to assist faculty members each summer. Students must meet the following federal guidelines in order to qualify for FWS funding and, therefore, to hold a research assistant position:

1. Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.

2. Show financial need based on the completion of the FAFSA.

3. Have a financial aid transcript on file in the Graduate School office before a salary check can be disbursed.

4. Be formally admitted for the fall term (following the summer) at Princeton University.

5. Be in good academic standing.

6. Provide the Graduate School with a copy of the student's 2007 IRS form 1040EZ, 1040A or 1040 or a statement that s/he is not required to file.

Graduate student assistants will be appointed only for the summer (July 7-Aug. 29). If you wish to apply for a graduate student research assistant to work with you, please download an application from the Graduate School website or contact Donald Snook at (609) 258-3168. The number of positions funded is dependent upon the level of federal funding, the number of students applying compared to departmental requests, and federal guidelines for student eligibility.

Note that there is a better chance of your getting a work-study assistant if you are able to identify a student. Graduate students wishing to work as research assistants must also complete an application.

Notification of assignments is normally made around mid-June each year.
